Fall Still Life 2012 (aka "Pumpkin")... a painting in progress...
Pumpkin is a 16 x 20" oil painting, on cradled panel, in the style of the Dutch Golden Age (1600's). My aim is to develop deep rich clear color. To accomplish this I alternate many layers of transparent glazes and partially opaque modeling. I do not mix paint to make colors, but rather use single pigments in each layer, eventually reaching the desired value and hue. This technique requires patience but the final effect is worth the trouble.
The following pictures show the painting after 6 layers, then one of the first underpainting layers, a preliminary pencil sketch, and a photograph of the actual elements (except the lemon - he wandered in somewhere along the way).
